Ingredients

  • lbs ground round
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the sauce:

  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

For serving:

  • - 8 hamburger buns or kaiser rolls

Instructions

  • Brown the ground round in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks.
  • Drain the fat from the cooked meat.
  • Add salt and chopped onions to the meat and cook until onions soften, about 5 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, mix together ketchup, sugar, mustard, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add the sauce to the meat mixture and stir to combine.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Serve hot on buns or kaiser rolls.

Notes

Ground chuck or ground beef can be substituted for ground round, but may require additional draining
The mixture can be made ahead and reheated - flavors actually improve after sitting overnight
For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture
Leftover sloppy joe mixture freezes well for up to 3 months
If the mixture becomes too thick during simmering, add a tablespoon of water or beef broth
Toast the buns lightly for better texture and to prevent sogginess
