Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 3 tablespoons honey mustard
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 lb thinly sliced ham
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1/3 cup nonfat milk
  • Cooking spray
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam

Instructions

  • Mix the egg whites and milk together in a large bowl until well combined.
  • Spread honey mustard evenly on 4 slices of bread.
  • Layer Swiss cheese and ham on the mustard-covered bread, then top with remaining bread slices to form 4 sandwiches.
  • Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture, coating both sides thoroughly.
  • Spray a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and heat to medium-high.
  • Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown, approximately 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Flip sandwiches carefully and cook the other side until golden brown.
  • Remove from heat, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve immediately with raspberry jam on the side.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better absorption of the egg mixture and less sogginess
Substitute turkey or chicken for ham if preferred, or add thin slices of turkey for a triple-meat version
Gruyere or Emmental cheese can replace Swiss cheese for a more complex flavor
Make-ahead tip: Assemble sandwiches the night before and refrigerate, then dip in egg mixture and cook in the morning
For a lighter version, use whole wheat bread and add spinach or arugula for extra nutrients
If you don't have honey mustard, mix 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard with 1 tablespoon honey
Cook on medium heat if sandwiches are browning too quickly before the cheese melts completely
